Understanding Prepaid Cell Phone Service Plans

Prepaid phones or pay-as-you-go phone services are growing in popularity as people try to look for strategies to spend less of their budget. Yet, are all prepaid cell phone companies truly as good as they advertise? How do you choose a prepaid phone plan that is right for you?

Here are some things to consider when evaluating various prepaid cell phone services:

Know your personal needs. We all have varying preferences and reasons for having cellular phones. Don’t just purchase a prepaid phone because it offers the lowest per minute calls or lots of free text messages. Before browsing through cell phone packages, you must identify your priorities.

For example, are you going to use your mobile phone primarily for text messaging? Do you need to call overseas all the time? Do you require roaming service? Do you have a specific handset in mind that you would rather use? Make note of your own priorities and make use of this list when analyzing cell phone plans.

Use online comparison tools. There are plenty of websites that not just give reviews but also a comparison tool so consumers can match up one prepaid cell phone plan to another. Using this method, you’ll be able to quickly see the positives and negatives that each cell phone service provider offers.

Pay attention to the fees. Indeed, a prepaid cell phone service can make it easier for you to lower your expenses as you can take control of your usage. Then again, when used incorrectly, using a prepaid phone can be a great deal more costly.

For instance, if you devote considerable time on phone calls on a regular basis, you might be better off with a post paid cell phone service. Remember that prepaid phones are billed by the minute so if you have used up your available balance on calls, you must purchase a new call card to reload your phone.

Check out the phone units. If you intend to buy a prepaid phone package that comes with a phone unit, make sure that you are aware of what type of handset you will get. You can visit a cell phone center or a retail outlet where different mobile phone models are exhibited. Thus, you can have a much better idea regarding the kind of handset you will get.

Check the features included. As opposed to a post paid plan, specific functions might not be provided by your prepaid phone service company. You might need to make a request to your service provider in order to use special phone features like call waiting, call forwarding, voice mail, etc. Remember that opting-in to these functions will require additional fees.

Wireless Internet Capability. Do you want to surf the internet from your cell phone? If yes, see to it that your phone unit is capable of connecting to the internet. Some prepaid phone handsets may not be compatible with wireless internet access. Furthermore, confer with your service provider how much you will pay per minute each time you get online.

Have a good look at Net 10 which is part of Tracfone–what a pleasure–ALL calls cost 10c per minute—local, national or roaming!Top up in time and your minutes roll over to the next month making it so easy to budget and save. They have phones from $20 all the way up to $79.99 FOR A Samsung T401G with a slide out qwerty keyboard, AND all phones have 300 minutes included on purchase! It’s a bargain!

    Agreed!

For me, prepaid rules. I did a bit of research and like Carol, discovered NET10 was the best for my purposes. I don’t use a lot of minutes — maybe 200 or so a month — and I’m not a mad texter or websurfer either, but 10¢ a minute for calls and 3¢ for texts is crazy good. And no fees per day or other bs.

I got a very nice Samsung phone with a slide-out qwerty keyboard and no one knows it’s prepaid. Costs me a big $30 a month for all my stuff.
