Shale gas drillers face scrutiny in U.S.

N orth American drilling companies’ methods are facing growing scrutiny that may curtail their efforts to tap a key U.S. source of natural gas. In the latest signal of the increasing public and political concern over the drilling, a U.S. congressional committee is investigating drilling firms, including two Calgary companies, over concerns that their drilling for shale gas deposits may be contaminating water supplies. Calfrac Well Services Ltd. and Sanjel Corp. have received letters from the House committee on energy and commerce, requesting information on all wells they’ve drilled over the past four years using a method known as hydraulic fracturing – including proximity to ground water sources and the chemicals used in the process. Toyota boasted saving $100-million on recall, documents show

T oyota officials claimed they saved the company $100-million (U.S.) by successfully negotiating with the government on a limited recall of floor mats in some Toyota and Lexus vehicles, according to new documents shared with congressional investigators. Toyota, in an internal presentation in July 2009 at its Washington office, said it saved $100-million or more by negotiating an “equipment recall” of floor mats involving 55,000 Toyota Camry and Lexus ES350 vehicles in September 2007. The savings are listed under the title, “Wins for Toyota – Safety Group.” The document cites millions of dollars in other savings by delaying safety regulations, avoiding defect investigations and slowing down other industry requirements.
