Canada eyes bigger salmon market share

S almon prices are jumping after the collapse of the Chilean industry through fish disease caused a sharp decline in global supply. Wholesale prices for Norwegian-produced Atlantic salmon have risen 20.6 per cent since the start of the year, says Statistics Norway. That has extended a year-long rally in prices, which have risen 32.5 per cent. Industry analysts expect the surge to feed through to what people pay for salmon steaks and fillets. Chile’s output, the world’s second largest, has been been hammered by the virus that causes infectious salmon anaemia, which emerged in 2007. The disease, which does not affects humans if afflicted fish are consumed, kills off salmon by attacking their red blood cells. Aslak Berge at First Securities in Norway said: “Chile, which was the second biggest producer of salmon, has seen its output plunge more than 75 per cent in two years. “…

Is Now The Time To Invest In The Stock Market Or Real Estate?

An ancient philosopher once said “May you live in interesting times”, and we certainly live in interesting times these days! The recession that began towards the end of 2008 and has stretched into 2010 with little signs of lessening anytime soon has made us all stop and think about our investments in many different ways. When the recession began the first thing that crashed was the stock market. Many people suggested that this recession was fueled by the financial sector meltdown. They were talking mainly about regular banks and also investment banks as well. For whatever the reason, the stock market became a very dangerous place to invest in at the beginning of the recession. While the stock market has come back to a large degree since its lows during the beginning of the recession, it’s still a rather dangerous and precarious place to keep your money. Or is it? Once people…

Trade agency probes Kodak patent complaint against Apple, RIM

A U.S. federal agency that oversees trade disputes said Wednesday it will investigate Eastman Kodak EKN-N Co.’s patent-infringement complaint over digital-camera technology used in iPhones and BlackBerrys. The U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington said Wednesday it will decide whether to block imports of the smart phones after Kodak alleged Apple Inc.’s AAPL-Q iPhone and Research in Motion Ltd.’s RIM-T camera-enabled BlackBerry models infringe on a 2001 patent covering ways to preview digital images. Patent cases can take years to resolve, and agreements over licensing and royalty payments often emerge. But the trade commission, which can order Customs to stop imports of products made with contested technology, is seen as a fast-track mediator that typically resolves disputes in 12 to 15 months. In December, after a year-long legal tussle, Kodak negotiated royalty paying deals with South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co…

How To Hire A Money Manager The Right Way – What To Expect

Investing in the stock market is tricky to say the least and it’s getting trickier as time goes by. Heck, most major investment banking houses hire entire divisions full of mathematicians and theoretical physicists… theoretical physicists!  How can I expect to handle my own finances and invest in the stock market with any degree of certainty when I’m going up against theoretical physicists and mathematicians? One answer to this problem is to simply hire a money manager and if you have considerable assets, at least $250,000-$500,000 or more, then this may make sense for you. But most people don’t know what to expect when it comes to hiring a money manager and that is exactly what I’m going to talk about in this article today. First of all, what exactly should you expect to have to pay a money manager? Usually they will charge you an annual fee that…

What To Expect From An Average Investment Club

I haven’t had what you would call the best track record when it comes to picking individual stocks to invest in on the stock market. I don’t want to sugarcoat it, but I’m terrible at it and that’s all there is to say!  But at the same time I can’t just throw in the towel and not invest in anything because I’ve got my retirement to think of. So what other options do I have? One option that many people turn to is the investment club. These things are usually groups of people that have banded together and pooled their money in order to make investment decisions as a group in the hope that they will do better than if they had invested individually. I’ve seen some interesting figures in recent years that show that most investment clubs double their money within five years which makes them better off than…
