SandP lowers rating on The Phoenix

Standard and Poor’s today downgraded The Phoenix Cos Inc.’s counterparty credit rating to triple-C+ from B-. The downgrade came a day after Phoenix released its fourth quarter and full-year results for 2009, in which it reported a $106.4 million fourth-quarter loss, or 91 cents per share.

Interac thwarted in corporate bid

C ommissioner of Competition Melanie Aitken has struck down the Interac Association’s request to become a for-profit corporation. The ruling means that the possibility of an initial public offering of Interac is now off the table, and it means that it will likely be easier for credit card giants Visa and MasterCard to increase their Canadian debit businesses.

Alfa Romeo could be built in Canada

A lfa Romeo is likely to return to North America by 2012 after a 15-year hiatus, the head of Fiat SpA, the company that makes the classic Italian sports car, said Friday. The brand was last sold in the U.S. market in 1995, and Fiat has pushed back its return several times
