Dubai World Deletes Cuba

The $14 billion Dubai World project includes literally hundreds of finger islands in the shapes of the countries of the world and the states of the U.S. Purchasers of the individual islands must use them to emulate the culture and cuisine o the lands they represent. Lately, though, even the oil-rich sheikhs of the emirate have had to cut back, and Cuba has apparently been deleted from the Dubai World map.

House set to vote on financial reform package

House lawmakers are ready to clear a significant hurdle in their drive to slap new financial restraints on big Wall Street institutions and to demand greater openness from the nation’s central bank. Motivated by the crisis that caused a near collapse in financial markets, a House committee scheduled a vote Wednesday on legislation that would give the government the right to dismantle financial firms that pose a risk to the economy, even if they are healthy.

Calif. insurers: We’ve got $12B invested in Iran

California’s insurance commissioner said Tuesday he will push insurance companies doing business in California to divest up to $12 billion in indirect investments in Iran’s defense, nuclear, energy and banking industries. Commissioner Steve Poizner said he will urge the companies to voluntarily sell the investments they reported to his office. If they refuse to sell within 120 days, he plans to try to force the divestment so money paid by California policyholders is not flowing to a U.S.-listed state sponsor of terrorism.
